Staying safe at Camber Sands

Camber Sands is a stunning beach, but the sea here demands respect. The tide retreats nearly half a mile at low water, then comes back fast, and the sandbars that look like solid ground at lunchtime can be islands by tea time. Read this once before you go.

The key hazards

  • Fast incoming tides: the rising tide moves quickly across the flat sand. Always check tide times before you set out and again before you go to the water. See today's tide times.
  • Sandbars and channels: at low tide, ridges of sand form parallel to the beach. As the tide rises, water fills the channels between them first. You can be walking on dry sand and become cut off without noticing. Never turn your back on an incoming tide.
  • Currents near the harbour entrance: the western end, where the River Rother meets the sea, has strong currents. Stay well clear of the harbour mouth itself.
  • Cold water and clothing: wear proper swimwear, not normal clothes. Wet clothes become heavy and drag you under. Even in June the sea is only around 15°C.
  • The wind: Camber is windier than it looks on a forecast. An offshore wind can carry inflatables out fast. The orange windsock means no inflatables in the water.

Lifeguards, patrols and flags

RNLI lifeguards patrol Camber Sands during the summer, typically from late May to early September, 10am to 6pm daily. Outside those hours and months, Rother's beach patrol team operates year-round, but they are patrols, not trained lifeguards. The RNLI presence here was introduced after a series of tragic incidents and is one of the biggest safety changes the beach has seen.

Red and yellow flags: swim and bodyboard between these
Black and white chequered: surf craft and kayaks zone
Red flag: danger, do not enter the water
Orange windsock: offshore winds, no inflatables

Lost-child wristbands are available from RNLI lifeguards and from the Coastal Office. Write your phone number on a wristband before the kids run off.
