Dogs at Camber Sands: 2026 rules and zones

Good news: dogs are welcome at Camber Sands every day of the year. The rules change between summer and winter, and the council uses fixed dates (not vague "peak season") to decide which is which. Here is exactly where you can take your dog, when, and the practical detail the official PDF leaves out.

1 May to 30 September: zones apply

Restricted to the dog zone

  • Dogs must stay within the signed dog-friendly zone
  • The main bathing areas in front of the council car parks are dog-free in this window
  • The dog-friendly zone (Zone C) is at the western end of the beach, towards Rye
  • Zone C is dog-friendly all year round, including through the summer ban
  • The Western car park (TN31 7RB) is the closest paid car park to the zone
  • Boundaries are signposted at the beach entrances. Look for the round dog signs
  • Keep dogs on a lead when crossing the dunes: the dune system is an SSSI
  • Bag and bin. Bins are available near the car parks
1 October to 30 April: full beach

The whole beach is yours

  • No zone restrictions: dogs can use the entire beach
  • Off-lead is fine where your dog has reliable recall
  • Winter mornings are the quietest. Most days you will have long stretches to yourselves
  • Bag and bin still applies. Bins continue to be emptied through winter
  • Tides come in fast and the sea retreats a long way at low tide. Keep an eye on the water and on sandbar channels
  • Cold mornings can be brisk: bring a towel and a water bowl

Dog-friendly pubs and stays nearby: The Owl in Camber welcomes dogs and dishes up locally sourced food. The Gallivant (the boutique hotel by the dunes) is dog-friendly. In Rye, The Globe Inn Marsh and The Standard Inn both welcome well-behaved dogs. See where to stay for the full picture.

💡 Local tip: If you are coming for a summer dog walk, head straight for the Western car park. It is the closest gateway to Zone C, and you avoid the temptation to nip on to the bathing beach with the dog in tow (which carries a fine). Walking from Central towards the zone is a long trudge. At Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, keep dogs on a lead all year round because of nesting and ground-feeding birds.
